1. The Exploratorium

This amazing museum can only be described as an enormous child's playroom! It was named by CNN as the number 1 spot for kids in the whole of the US and with over 600 exhibits for kids to touch, pull, push, talk to and play with, one can see why! They host several activities for families during the week and during the weekend. Prices start at $19.95 for under 12s and $29.95 for adults. Under 3's go free!

Relive your youth at The Walt Disney Family Museum by checking out original Disney artwork and how pictures can create an animation. Here, kids can learn through workshops, art and the basics of animation. Admission for under 17s is $15 and adult tickets cost $25. Be careful! There is an amazing shop here…!

3. Pier 39

There is always loads going on at Pier 39 and it is a fantastic place to spend a whole afternoon. There are sea lions to look out for, jugglers and magicians and generally good old fashioned family entertainment. You can find restaurants and cafes, the aquarium is also here, a carousel, musical stairs and shops galore!

This art and technology experience comes in highly recommended as a place designed for families. The hands-on exhibits are divided into 6 areas: the imagination lab, the innovation lab, the community lab, the animation studio, the tech lab and the music studio. This place will allow your children to see endless possibilities! They have regular workshops and activities for children, even those that are really young: the Bouncy Bears music class is for kids as young as 1! Admission is $12.95 for all and Under 2s go free!

5. Bay Area Discovery Museum

You have to cross the Golden Gate Bridge to get to this museum (kill two birds with one stone) and it won't disappoint! The outdoors area is a wonderland for children where they can investigate rock pools, spider webs, shipwrecks, gravel pits and more. Inside the exhibitions are child centred and educational such as workshops on gravity and friction and interactive displays on magnets and transportation. Tickets cost $14.95 for all.

6. Calacademy

Calacademy is a natural history museum, planetarium and aquarium all under one roof… Talk about bang for your buck! It is hailed as one of the most interactive aquariums in the world with over 40,000 living animals. You can even visit at night time to check out what all these animals are up to once all the humans are gone and you can book to sleepover at the museum too! Prices start at $25.95 per child over the age of 4 and $35.95 per adult.

7. Golden Gate Park

If Carlsberg did parks… Golden Gate Park is the place to go to in the San Francisco area. Here you will find the Koret Children's Quarter playground with its concrete slides (yes, concrete), climbing walls and picnic areas. Don't forget to check out a centenary carousel here too, built in 1914!

8. Presidio

Visit Presidio to enjoy the calmer side of San Francisco, with its wooded areas, its hiking trails and you can even spot whales from here. Check out the website for alerts regarding visiting the area as it is updated daily.

Get rid of some energy by running up and down the beach or just enjoying the kids playing here. San Francisco has a great selection of beaches to just enjoy.

10. Urban Putt

A great place to practise some golf skills while chilling out and refuelling at their restaurant. Go here at the end of your trip as each hole is dedicated to buildings around San Francisco and you can check how many you've been to.

We didn't include but feel we should mention the biggest Chinatown outside of Asia is here and deserves a visit. Make sure you squeeze in a Bay cruise and perhaps visit Alcatraz!
